One of the tools I use for market research is an Online Entrepreneur Tool - Google Insight that is a must have.  You can access the tool here Google Insights.  Remember to log into your Google account to get the most from the tool.   I ran a search for the keyword “eagar” to see what would come up.  As you can see in the graph below, I can view the average daily search for the keyword over the past 5 or so years…

eagar-insights-graph

some of the other cool features of this Online Entrepreneur Tool - Google Insight is that it gives me other relevant information about the keyword that I typed in as seen in the image below:

eagar-related-search-terms-and-countries1

I was pretty impressed by the information provided, and if used efficiently, you can get a lot of key information about your target market from this cool Online Entrepreneur Tool - Google Insight.

Here are my thoughts on 2008 Review - 2009 Trend Forcast (Utah Edition):

  • 2008 Housing & Construction = sharp turn downward.
  • 2009 Housing & Construction = a difficult year.  My advice, if your going to stay and succeed in this market as a small business prepare for the long haul.  Otherwise get out now, and go into another sector.  I have many friends who have or are taking their small business away from the office and moving it home to reduce overhead, office space expenditures, and try to salvage their business on the side.
  • 2008 Internet = growing but a little slower.
  • 2009 Internet = continued growth.  My advice, if you have a business, now is the time to get on the Internet.  I predict there will be a lot of mainstream changes this year including the broad use of video on websites and in marketing activities, more and more business will take place on the internet, and social and community websites will continue to broaden their reach creating more opportunities for interaction (aka - Facebook).
  • 2008 Computers = more laptops sold than desktops
  • 2009 Computers = another big year for mobile computing.  This year we will see distribution of mobile content and new apps for mobile devices that will  greatly enhance the trend away from desktop computing to mobile computing.  This is the break out year for mobile computing.  I usually buy or build a new computer each year.  This is mainly because I build very robust machines and desktops have traditionally given me the most flexibility.  MOVE OVER DESKTOPS… I do not anticipate buying a desktop ever again.  For 3 years now I have used BlackBerry for my smart phone, it was a great choice.
  • 2008 Mobile Content Distribution= increased usage especially with IPhones
  • 2009 Mobile Content Distribution= more and more content continues to come to mobile devices as these devices get smarter, faster, smaller, etc.  2009 will see a lot more advances as leading edge technology companies continue to release killer mobile products.  More and more I am doing so much on my mobile devices.

Great news for 2009 Trend Forcast (Utah Edition).

Amazingly with all of the roller coaster activity in the economy, Forbes reports that Warren Buffett comes out ahead!  Is Warren Buffett Recession Proof?  Take a look at the how the richest in the world fared:

NAME                                 AUG.29 NET WORTH       OCT.1 NET WORTH

  • Sheldon Adelson                            $15.0 billion                  $11.0 billion
  • Charles Ergen                                         8.1                                 5.9
  • Lawrence Ellison                                   27.0                               25.4
  • Carl Icahn                                             12.0                               10.4
  • Sergey Brin                                           15.9                                14.4
  • Larry Page                                            15.8                                 14.3
  • Harold Hamm                                       7.0                                    5.5
  • Bill Gates                                             57.0                                  55.5
  • Michael Dell                                        17.3                                  15.9
  • Dan Duncan                                          7.6                                    6.3
  • Kirk Kerkorian                                      11.2                                  10.0
  • Jeffrey Bezos                                          8.7                                    7.6
  • Warren Buffett                                      50.0                                  58.0

So Warren Buffett also appears to have passed up Bill Gates on the list!  I don’t know if Warren Buffett is Recession Proof or not, but gaining 8 billion in one of the worst performing months for the stock market is not bad!

After reading some interesting articles on Google’s 3rd quarter performance, I had to ask: Is Google Recession Proof ?

Background:  So Google this week announced better than expected results for 2008 3rd quarter, which included the rough September on Wall Street.  I will admit that I do not think that the full blunt of what happened on Wall Street has hit businesses that advertise online, but it is interesting.

You can view the entire press release here: Google Third Quarter 2008 Results

Predictions from Google executives state that PPC (pay-per-click) advertising would do better in a downturn that other forms of advertising.

Why is this?  According to Eric Schmidt, advertisers, in general, continued to spend on search engine advertising, probably because it is more targeted to likely customers and measurable than other forms of advertising.

Is this good news for online advertisers?  Maybe.  Although these results are for 3rd quarter, I think the 4th quarter results will be much more telling.  it will give us 3 full months of Google results after the financial roller coaster on Wall Street in September.  As far as trends go for the Internet, look at Google’s 4th quarter results in January 2009.  Then we can better answer the question, “Is Google Recession Proof?”.
